People First, Tech Last: Leadership in an Era of Change

We are living in the fastest period of technological advancement in human history. The rise of AI, predictive analytics, and digital health tools has the potential to revolutionize medicine—but also to overwhelm and alienate those who deliver care.

Healthcare is not, and never will be, about technology first. It is about people.

My colleague and co-author Brian Spisak, PhD has framed this philosophy simply: “People first, tech last.” That is not a rejection of technology—it is a call to use it wisely (and honestly, aggressively). It’s a reminder that AI is a tool, not a leader. It will be those with imagination—those who can see beyond the hype and harness technology in service of real human needs—who will shape the future of healthcare.

As rapid change accelerates, leaders will be judged not by their ability to manage complexity, but by their ability to reimagine it. As Harvard University’s Chris Argyris taught us, organizations don’t just need new answers—they need new ways of thinking. And Robert Fritz reminds us that creation isn’t about solving problems alone—it’s about bringing something truly new into existence.

We are at a crossroads. 𝙒𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚, 𝙤𝙧 𝙬𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙚 𝙞𝙩. The best leaders will be those who:

💡 See beyond the immediate challenge and recognize patterns that others miss

💡 Challenge their own assumptions rather than reinforcing the status quo

💡 Create conditions for innovation by building cultures and leadership systems that nurture imagination

In this series, we will explore what healthcare could look like when leaders apply imagination, not just administration.

We’ll dive into the economic, cultural, and technological shifts shaping the future—and how we can lead with vision, rather than being led by disruption.

If we get this right, we can create a system that not only adapts to change, but drives it, productively.
